ESL outlined a comprehensive support process to give players the best possible chance of making it to Birmingham. That support includes personal invitation letters for each player, advance hotel and flight bookings, detailed event itineraries, additional supporting documents from the host city where available, and outreach to local embassies and consulates to help expedite appointments. In cases where visa issues cannot be resolved at all, ESL also ensures that potential replacement teams have begun their own visa processes, minimizing the risk of gaps in the field.
Critically, ESL began reaching out to qualifying contenders before the qualifier stage even started, targeting teams likely to both qualify and require visas. This proactive approach reduces last-minute scrambles and gives players the maximum window to get their documentation in order.
The harder challenge, ESL acknowledged, comes after teams arrive. Eliminated teams face an uncomfortable reality: returning to an arena where thousands of fans are cheering for opponents who knocked them out. ESL's answer is to book hotel rooms and practice facilities for all 16 teams for the full duration of the event, regardless of results. All squads have been encouraged to attend for fan meet-and-greets and activations, keeping the human element of the tournament alive even after a team's competitive run ends.
